Navid Afkari: The U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Iran not to execute Navid Afkari, a famous wrestler who authorities say killed a man during 2018 anti-government protests.

The American President said in a tweet on Thursday “Hearing that Iran is looking to execute a great and popular wrestling star, 27-year-old Navid Afkari, whose sole act was an anti-government demonstration on the streets. They were protesting the “country’s worsening economic situation and inflation”….

…To the leaders of Iran, I would greatly appreciate if you would spare this young man’s life, and not execute him. Thank you!”

Who is Navid Afkari ?

Navid Afkari is an Iranian wrestler who has been sentenced for execution by Iran. He has won several medals nationally. The 27-year-old, however, has been sentenced regarding his participation in protests a couple of years back.

UFC president, Dana White, sent out a strong message of support and urged Donald Trump to save wrestler Navid Afkari from execution.

Judiciary authorities in Iran say Afkari was sentenced to death for the death of Hassan Torkaman, a water supply company employee in the southern city of Shiraz, following an anti-government protest over economic crisis.

A provincial court in Shiraz sentenced Afkari to death and his brothers Vahid Afkari and Habib Afkari to 54 and 27 years in prison, respectively. All three were construction workers.

However, there are reports alleging that Navid Afkari’s confession was taken after the wrestler was tortured.

Hassan Younesi, Navid Afkari’s lawyer, told that there is no evidence showing he had a role the victim’s death and has requested a retrial.

The news website of Iran’s judiciary, Mizanonline, on Monday denied Navid had been tortured and called the Greco-Roman wrestler a “murderer of an innocent citizen.”

The July verdicts that were reported in August prompted an outcry both in Iran and internationally.
