Tarun Gogoi passed away: Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi passed away on Monday. He was 86.

He was undergoing treatment for past few days in Gauhati medical college and hospital following post COVID-19 complications. He was suffering from multiple organ failure with only minor eye reflexes and minimal brain response.

Earlier, Himanta Biswa Sarma informed media from Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) that former CM is completely on life support system.

On 21st November, Tarun Gogoi was admitted to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital and has been on artificial life support ever since.

Tarun Gogoi is the longest serving Chief Minister of Assam. He served Assam as the Chief Minister from 2001 to 2016.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sadness over the demise of the Ex-CM Tarun Gogoi. He wrote in a tweet, “Shri Tarun Gogoi Ji was a popular leader and a veteran administrator, who had years of political experience in Assam as well as the Centre. Anguished by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and supporters in this hour of sadness. Om Shanti.”

Rahul Gandhi also took to the micro blogging site to express his condolence message to the former Chief Minister. He said in a tweet, “Shri Tarun Gogoi was a true Congress leader. He devoted his life to bringing all the people and communities of Assam together. For me, he was a great and wise teacher. I loved and respected him deeply. I will miss him. My love and condolences to Gaurav & the family.”

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal flew back to Guwahati from Dibrugarh after cancelling his scheduled programs to be with Gogoi’s family.

He tweeted, I express heartfelt condolences on the demise of former Chief Minister, a tall leader & our most respected Tarun Gogoi da. It’s the end of an era in Assam’s public life. He was so vibrant and full of life until a few days back, couldn’t believe this sad news.

He added, Tarun Gogoi was a people’s leader who had great contribution in Assam’s political and public sphere. Even though we were in Opposition parties, we shared a wonderful rapport and he was a guiding figure. My deepest condolences to his family and well-wishers.

Earlier on Monday, PM Narendra Modi, former PM Manmohan Singh and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called Gogoi’s son Gaurav Gogoi and enquired after the former CM’s health. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi too called Gaurav.
