Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a big announcement on Friday by renaming Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award to Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. PM Modi took to his twitter handle to make this announcement.
I have been getting many requests from citizens across India to name the Khel Ratna Award after Major Dhyan Chand. I thank them for their views.
Respecting their sentiment, the Khel Ratna Award will hereby be called the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award!

The Khel Ratna Award is the highest sporting honour in the Nation and there were many debates in the past to rename this award after the name of a prominent sportsperson.
Major Dhyan Chand was an Indian field hockey player widely regarded as one of the greatest in the history of hockey. He was known for his extraordinary goal scoring feats, in addition to earning three Olympic gold medals, in 1928,1932 and 1936.
